Properties: Transparent crystals or granules. Efflorescent in warm air. d 1.45. mp 58°; becomes anhydr at 120°; dec at higher temp. One gram dissolves in 0.8 ml water, 0.6 ml boiling water, 19 ml alcohol. pH of 0.1 molar aq soln at 25°: 8.9.

Use: Anhydrous form as auxiliary in acetylations. Trihydrate in photography; as reagent in anal. chemistry to eliminate effect of strong acids (buffer); for foot warmers and milk-bottle warmers. Technical grades are used as a mordant in dyeing. As acidulant in food. Pharmaceutic aid (in dialysis solutions).
Therap-Cat-Vet: Has been used in bovine ketosis.
