Derivative Type: Monohydrate
Properties: Deep red powder, or monoclinic crystals; composed of dimeric units. Easily oxidized, especially when moist, to chromic acetate. Loses H2O when dried over P2O5 at 100°, changing color to brown. d 1.79. Slightly sol in cold water; readily sol in hot water; sol in and reacts with most acids; slightly sol in alcohol. Practically insoluble in ether. Keep tightly closed. LD50 orally in rats: 11.26 g/kg (Smyth).
