Properties: Yellow crystals. d 1.57. mp 130-132°; explodes at about 180-190°. Insol in water. Sol in alc, ether, benzene, glacial acetic acid. Keep soln in the dark. Causes yellow staining to skin and hair.

CAUTION: Potential symptoms of overexposure are sensitization dermatitis, itching, erythema; edema on nasal folds, cheeks and neck; keratitis; sneezing; anemia; fatigue; coughing, coryza; irritability; malaise, headache, lassitude and insomnia; nausea, vomiting; liver and kidney damage. Use: As indicator, 0.1 g in 60 ml alcohol with water to make 100 ml. pH: 10.8 colorless, 13.0 reddish-brown. One to five drops of soln required for 10 ml liquid. Salt error said to be small. Also used in explosives.
