The antiviral spectrum of this inhibitor is wide, and unlike interferon, its activity is stable after proteolytic enzyme treatment and heating. AV is produced in the absence of interferon inducers and does not possess such strict host specificity as interferon. It exerts its effects at any early stage of virus replication.
