Decarboxylation of the tricyclic carboxylic acid (I) in boiling diphenyl ether leads to (II). This is further chlorinated to (III) employing POCl3 in the presence of N,N-diethylaniline. Then, displacement of chloride (III) with ethylenediamine at 60癈 gives rise to the title compound, which is finally isolated as the corresponding hydrochloride salt.
