The title compound is prepared starting from the previously reported 3-bromo-1,8-naphthoylenebenzimidazole (I). Cyanation of (I) with cuprous cyanide in pyridine affords nitrile (II). This is then hydrolyzed to the target carboxylic acid employing sulfuric acid in aqueous acetic acid.
