Febrifugine (I) is protected as the tert-butyl carbamate (II) by treatment with Boc2O. Oxidation of the secondary alcohol group of (II) employing Dess-Martin periodinane gives rise to ketone (III). The N-Boc group of (III) is finally cleaved under acidic conditions to yield the title compound.
