Methanol derivative (I) is converted into the corresponding methyl chloride compound (II) by reaction with thionyl chloride in dichloromethane/cyclohexane. The desired product is then obtained by displacement of the chlorine by attack with 1H-1,2,4-triazole (III) in dioxane.
