Literature References: Prepd commercially from 2-diethylaminoethanol and ethyl acetoacetate. 2-Chlorotriethylamine (formed by the action of thionyl chloride on the alcohol) is condensed with the sodium derivative of ethyl acetoacetate to yield an intermediate ester, which is hydrolyzed and decarboxylated to novol ketone (5-diethylamino-2-pentanone). This is hydrogenated in the presence of ammonia to yield novoldiamine. Several other prepns, i.e., from 1,4-pentanediol and diethylamine: Kyrides, US 2365825 (1944 to Monsanto). Purification procedure: Jones, US 2400934 (1946 to Lilly).
Properties: Liquid. Amine odor. d2620 0.819. bp753 200-200.5°. nD26 1.4403. Sol in water, alcohol, ether.
Boiling point: bp753 200-200.5°
Index of refraction: nD26 1.4403
Density: d2620 0.819
Use: Manuf quinacrine and other antimalarials having the same basic side chain.
