In making Strong Coal Tar Solution the Ethanol (96 per cent) may be replaced by Industrial Methylated Spirit1.

Extemporaneous preparation

The following directions apply.

Mix the Coal Tar, warmed if necessary to render it fluid, with the Polysorbate 80, pour this mixture in a thin stream into 700 mL of Ethanol (96 per cent) in a closed vessel fitted with an agitator; continue agitation throughout the addition of the mixture and for 1 hour thereafter. Allow the mixture to stand for not less than 24 hours, decant and filter the supernatant liquid, wash the vessel and filter with Ethanol (96 per cent), combine the filtrate and washings and add sufficient Ethanol (96 per cent) to produce 1000 mL.
