Literature References: Prepd by treating salicylsalicylic acid q.v., with acetic anhydride or by fractionating an acetylsalicylic acid melt: DE 236196 (1908 to Boehringer).
Properties: Leaflets from dilute acetic acid, mp 159°; also reported as mp 152°, Rudoi, Sov. Med. 1941, no. 12, 26-27. Practically insol in water, benzene. One part dissolves in 3 parts boiling alcohol, in 70 parts boiling ether, in 45 parts boiling benzene. Sol in alkaline solns, but is saponified by heating in alk soln. On acidification of the soln salicylic acid is precipitated.
